Learn About Infield Softball Gloves

Fastpitch infield softball gloves are shorter in length and have a more shallow web pattern, which allows fielders to quickly transfer the ball from glove to hand. Softball infield gloves measure 11 to 12.5 inches and feature i-web, closed webs, and dual post-web patterns creating a more shallow pocket. Their small pocket allows the fielder to find the ball quickly and reliably every time. Try different web styles for that position depending on where you are in the infield. For more information on the different webbing options, check out our Fastpitch Softball Glove Guide. Pitchers typically use infielder gloves, although some brands sell gloves specifically for pitchers. Pitchers' gloves traditionally have a closed web pattern to stop hitters from seeing the pitcher’s grip on the ball. To view our complete section of fastpitch infield gloves, click here.

Infield Softball Glove FAQs

Is there a difference between infield and outfield gloves in softball?

Infield gloves are smaller than outfield gloves. They also have a shallower pocket to help the infielder catch and transfer the ball more easily. They also have special webs that help with ground balls and transfers. For more information on web styles, consult our Fastpitch Softball Glove Guide.

Is it better to get an infield or outfield glove?

If you play both infield and outfield, we recommend getting an infield glove. Infield gloves are more versatile than outfield gloves and will not hinder your ability in the outfield. However, using an outfield glove in the infield will put you at a major disadvantage.

Are you supposed to flare an infield glove?

Flaring your infield gloves comes down to personal preference. The term “flare” refers to bending the edges of the thumb and pinky outward to create a larger pocket. Many infielders like this style as it makes the opening to the pocket larger and makes fielding groundballs easier.

Why do infielders use an I Web?

Many infielders prefer to use an I web glove. This web has a shallower pocket to help the player make quick transfers. The open web style also helps the player see the ball in the pocket for quick retrieval.

Does an infielder want an open or closed pocket?

Similar to web style, pockets are also a personal preference. Many infielders like to use an I web which has an open pocket so they can see the ball in the glove. However, some players prefer a closed-pocket design as they can feel more secure. Find the pocket style that works best for you.
