Learn About USSSA Senior League Baseball Bats

While the name would suggest use by an older player, that is not necessarily the case. Senior League Baseball Bats are merely USSSA baseball bats used by players in “kid-pitch” leagues. This term directly correlates with Junior Big Barrel Bats, which are only to be used in either coach or machine-pitch leagues. Simply put, if you see Senior League just think of a regular USSSA bat.

How to Choose the Right Senior League Baseball Bat for You

When deciding on the right USSSA bat, the options can feel overwhelming. Unlike BBCOR bats, there are multiple lengths and drops to choose from. Picking the correct size bat is the most important decision you make when buying a bat. Check out our bat buying guide and our baseball bat size chart to choose the length and weight that is right for you. Also important to consider are the USSSA Guidelines that specify what drop is legal in each age group. Once you decide on the length and weight, choose a material for your bat. You can select either an aluminum or composite bat in either one-piece or two-piece construction. One-piece bats have a stiffer feel at contact, and provide more energy transfer, but do transfer more vibrations to the hands. On the other hand, two-piece bats have a bit of flex giving you more whip on contact, normally have a bigger barrel, and dampen vibrations to the hands. Weigh the pros and cons of each and select the one that is best for your playing style.

Senior League Baseball Bat Sizing Chart

Senior league baseball bat sizes range from 31 inches to 33 inches in length and are roughly 19 ounces to 25 ounces in weight, although some can go up to 30 ounces. These heavier, longer bats give experienced players added power behind their swings without sacrificing control over the ball’s trajectory after contact.

Senior League Baseball Bats FAQ

What are Senior League Baseball bat drop rules?

Senior League Baseball bats are the same as USSSA bats. The minimum drop USSSA restricts all ages 13U to is a -8. In 14U the lightest bat you can use is a -5. However, in ages younger than 13U there is no restriction on weight or length as long as the bat has a USSSA BPF 1.15 stamp.

Can you use a Senior League bat in Little League?

Senior Leauge bats are USSSA bats. Little League and USSA are two separate youth baseball organizations and have different rules and regulations for the bats you can use. Little League uses the USA bat certification. USSSA bats are higher performing than USA bats and therefore do not meet the safety standards set by Little League. Only USA bats can be used in Little League.

What is the difference between Senior League and Junior League bats?

Junior League bats are bats that are used in either coach-pitch or machine-pitch leagues. Senior League bats are merely USSSA bats used by players in “kid pitch” leagues.

What’s the difference between Senior League and Youth Big Barrel?

There is no difference. Youth Big Barrel and Senior League are the same thing and refer to the same bats.

What are the age ranges for USSSA Senior League and Big Barrel Youth?

The age range for these bats is 8U to 15U.

What bats can you use in juniors?

Junior leagues are coach pitch or machine pitch leagues. There are specific Junior Big Barrel bats that come in small sizes and big drops. For example, Junior Big Barrel bats are normally -10 or -12 and are normally approved by USSSA. However, not all coach pitch leagues follow USSSA guidelines so be sure to consult the rules of your specific league.
