How to Choose the Right Type of Batting Helmet

Different levels of play require a specific type of batting helmet. In order to choose the best helmet for your needs, it’s important to understand what the best baseball helmet requirements are for every level of play.

High School/Adult Baseball Helmets

Adult and high-school baseball helmets come in various sizes from small to x-large. Depending on the manufacturer, adult sizes line up with hat sizes, ranging from 6 1/4" to 7 5/8". High-school age players are required to wear a NOCSAE certified helmet with two ear flaps. Certification requirements vary in adult baseball leagues.

Youth Baseball Helmets

All youth baseball helmets must be NOCSAE certified and have flaps covering both ears. Youth helmets cannot be worn after the certification date has expired. A sticker indicating it has been certified should remain on the helmet at all times. Youth sizes run between 6" to 7 1/8".

Tee Ball Batting Helmets

Just like youth baseball players, tee ball players must wear a NOCSAE certified helmet with ear flaps. Some tee ball leagues require helmets to be worn in the field or be equipped with a face mask. Make sure you verify your league's helmet rules before purchasing a helmet.

Caged Batting Helmets

Caged batting helmets are often worn in lower age youth leagues and fast-pitch softball. These helmets must also be NOCSAE certified in most cases and come in sizes ranging from small for young players to x-large for adults.

Single Flap Baseball Helmets

Single ear flap baseball helmets are rarely seen in amateur baseball leagues. Some professionals do wear a single flap helmet that only covers the ear that faces the pitcher when at bat.

Dual Flap Baseball Helmets

Dual flap helmets have two ear flaps to protect both ears. All youth helmets should have two ear flaps. Dual flap helmets come in sizes for baseball players of any age.

NOCSAE Batting Helmet Standards

The National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) requires third-party certification that endorses the safety of many types of athletic equipment, including baseball and softball helmets. NOCSAE standards must be met for baseball and softball helmets at youth, high school, and most adult levels. For more information on NOCSAE certification check out their official website.
